Welcome to Osaki!
On behalf of all of us at Osaki, I like to thank you for choosing Osaki as your destination. I am very happy that you have come so far to this town. Wherever you are from, you are an important member of the community in our town!
There must be many challenges living here as an international resident: learning how to communicate with the locals, getting used to daily customs and social codes, and not knowing many people around. Life can get hard sometimes. This website was made for you to provide you with useful information during your stay. Hopefully it will make your daily life a little easier and a little more enjoyable.
At this time of the pandemic and in the middle of the climate crisis, we humans have many challenges too. The first two parts of the website are dedicated to dealing with Covid-19 and natural disasters. Please take a look and be prepared. Please stay healthy and safe.
I have lived here all my life. I know the place and the people very well and feel very much at home here. It is my responsibility to make sure that you will be able to build a good relationship with this place and the people, so that eventually you will feel at home too.

Covid-19 Vaccine
Covid-19 vaccination would be available to everyone living in Japan. There will be no charge. Further details would be available from COVID-19 Vaccine Navi website.
Protecting yourself and people around you against Covid-19
Here are the basic guidelines on Covid-19 prevention, issued by the Ministry of Health, Labour and Welfare.
- Wash hands often.
- Wear a mask.
- Ventilate.
- Keep social distance.
- Avoid the three C’s (crowded spaces, close contact, closed space).
- Keep healthy lifestyle.
- Stay at home if you have a fever or cold-like symptoms.

Natural disasters
Unfortunately, Japan is a “country of natural disasters” and there is always a chance that you will encounter a natural disaster. Common natural disasters in Japan include typhoon, heavy rain, snowstorm, flood, landslide, earthquake, tsunami and volcanic eruption.
1. Advanced warnings
Warnings for extreme weather conditions and tsunamis, and information on earthquakes are available at Japan Meteorological Agency website. (available in 15 languages)
Loud alarm will go off on neighbourhood loudspeaker in case of severe warnings. Make sure you are in a safe place. If you hear an alarm after an earthquake, most likely it is a tsunami warning. Please escape as soon as possible to a high ground.
Area Mail and J-Alert are area-based warning systems available on most mobile phones. In order for your phone to receive warnings, the option needs to be turned on. The alarm can go off few seconds before the impact of the earthquake. Be sure you are not near objects that can fall. Hide under a sturdy table.
Safety Tips, an app made by the Japan Tourism Agency, also offers push notifications for warnings and other useful information on natural disaster and safety. (available in 15 languages)
Japan Safe Travel is a twitter account run by Japan National Tourism Organization for providing real time natural disasters and safety information. (supported language: English)

3. Tsunami evacuation map
There is a risk of tsunami in Osaki. This map shows the local topography and evacuation centres. Check the location of your home and places you go to in town. Then, using the map, find the nearest higher ground from these locations.
4. Preparing for natural disasters
As there are numerous natural disasters in Japan, preparation has become part of life. life
Osaki is a rural agricultural town by the coast of Shibushi bay and forms part of the Osumi Peninsula. The mild weather and easy access to the sea and mountains makes this place a great place for spending time outdoors.
The farms here are productive all year around. There are plenty of fresh local agricultural produce. Always check out the local produce corner at supermarkets for seasonal bargains.
Life in a foreign country can be stressful, especially at first. Why not relax at natural hot spring bath? Or have a drink of Shochu, a liquor made from sweet potatoes?

There are auditorium, meeting rooms, kitchen and tatami room at the community centre. The spaces can be booked and used by anyone for a small fee.

A long garden situated along the Mochidome River. There are picturesque water features and collection of tanokami (god of the rice field) stone statues. A perfect park for a stroll.
Located behind the townhall, the park is situated on the hillside. There are three tennis courts and a great view at the top.

Swimming
If you like to swim during the hot summer months, there is the Masu maru Pool, an outdoor leisure pool located in the middle of the pine forrest.
Historic ruins
If you are curious about the history of this place, visiting the Yokose Kofun, a 5th Century tomb of a local lord, still standing proudly within the rice field, might be a start.
Camping
Kuni-no-Matsubara Camping Site is a perfect place for a staycation. Surrounded by the pine forrest, you can make a bonfire, BBQ, look at the stars, all in your own town. There are many other affordable campsites in Osumi Peninsula.
Shopping
The main shopping area of Osaki is Sammoji. The shops and restaurants are well visited by the locals. Many of the shops have been here for generations and the shelves are full of surprising finds and good bargains.

Public transportation
Many places in Kagoshima and beyond can be explored by public transportation. Kagoshima Transportation (operated by Iwasaki Cooperation) provides local bus and ferry services throughout Kagoshima. Some areas are covered by JR trains. Although a little tricky to use, there are some online journey planners that can help you plan your trip. Bus timetables are available at each bus stop.
Japanese language learning resource
There are many Japanese language learning resources available online. Connect and Enhance Your Life in Japanese is one example. (Supported language: Japanese, English, Chinese, Portuguese, Spanish, Vietnamese) The key to improving your Japanese is to use it. Trying talking to people!
recycling
Osaki is renown for its recycling. From 2006 to 2017, for 12 years, it recorded the highest percentage of recycled domestic waste amongst all cities and towns in Japan. This means that recycling is part of everyday life. It will take some time to familiarise yourself with the system of throwing away your waste. Hopefully this chart will help.

For any problems, the staffs of Osaki Town Hall are there to give you help, advice, information and connect you to appropriate support organizations.
